Resize vs. crop
Resizing changes how many pixels make up the whole image while keeping the entire scene visible. Cropping removes part of the scene to change the framing. "Fill Frame" mode does both: it crops first, then resizes to fit an exact box.
Pixels vs. DPI
DPI (dots per inch) is a printing instruction — it tells a printer how densely to pack the pixels you already have onto paper. Changing DPI alone doesn't add or remove any pixels, so it doesn't change on-screen quality at all.
Why enlarging an image can look soft
Increasing pixel dimensions does not automatically create new image detail. The resizer has to invent in-between pixels by interpolation, which tends to soften edges and fine texture compared with a genuinely higher-resolution source.
What "long edge" resizing does
Setting a long-edge target (e.g. 1600px) resizes so the image's longer side hits that number, and the other side follows automatically. It's the easiest way to size a mixed batch of portrait and landscape photos to a consistent scale.
Aspect ratio, in short
Aspect ratio is the proportion between width and height (e.g. 16:9). Locking it means both dimensions scale together, so nothing looks stretched or squashed.

50% width + 50% height ≈ 25% of the original pixel count — area scales with the square of the percentage.
Portrait images stay portrait and landscape images stay landscape — this is the recommended option for mixed-orientation batches.
Images are only reduced if they exceed these limits — never enlarged.
Meeting a minimum may require upscaling smaller images, which can soften detail.
DPI is print-density metadata, not extra pixel detail — it doesn't sharpen an image, it only tells a printer how densely to lay out the pixels you already have.

How to resize an image without losing quality
Pick a target that matches where the image is going rather than resizing blindly. For screens, size to the long edge (1600–1920px covers most website and social uses); for print, use the print-size calculator above so the pixel count matches your paper size and DPI. Keep the aspect ratio locked unless you intentionally want a different shape, and avoid enlarging a small photo past its original size — upscaling stretches existing pixels rather than adding real detail.
Resize vs. crop
Resizing scales the whole image up or down; cropping trims part of the frame away. If you want a square photo from a rectangular original without cutting anything out, use "Fit + padding" instead of a crop-based mode.
Pixels vs. DPI
Pixel dimensions (width × height) determine on-screen sharpness. DPI only matters once an image is printed — it tells the printer how many of those pixels to pack into each inch of paper. A 3000×2000px photo is exactly as detailed at 72 DPI as it is at 300 DPI; only the implied print size changes.

- Hero / banner images: roughly 1600–1920px on the long edge
- Blog article images: roughly 1000–1200px wide
- Thumbnails: roughly 300–480px wide

How to resize images for printing
Multiply your print size in inches by your target DPI to get the pixel dimensions you need — for example, a 6 × 4 in print at 300 DPI needs an 1800 × 1200px source. The print-size tab above does this calculation automatically and warns you if your source image falls short.

How to reduce image file size
File size drops from three things working together: smaller pixel dimensions, a more efficient format (WebP or AVIF over JPEG or PNG), and a slightly lower quality setting. The optimization strategy selector above lets you prioritize which of those matters most for your use case.
Why enlarging images can reduce quality
A resizer can only work with the pixels that already exist in the source photo. Making an image larger means inventing new pixel values in between the real ones through interpolation — it fills the gap smoothly, but it can't reconstruct detail the camera never captured, which is why enlarged photos often look softer.
