How Blockchain Is Helping Nepali Farmers: QR-Coded Honey, Goats & Junar
Agriculture employs roughly 70 percent of Nepal's population and generates close to a quarter of the country's GDP, yet for decades Nepali farmers have struggled with the same problem: buyers simply could not verify where their food actually came from. A middleman's word was often the only "proof" behind a claim of purity, origin, or farming method. Blockchain-based traceability has quietly started to change that — letting a shopper in Kathmandu, or a buyer overseas, scan a QR code and see a product's entire journey from farm to table.
This article looks at three real, running examples of blockchain traceability in Nepali agriculture — sweet oranges, goats, and honey — and what they mean for farmers, cooperatives, and consumers.
The Platform Behind It All: AgriClear
Most of Nepal's agricultural blockchain traceability runs on a single platform: AgriClear, a mobile-based system incubated by eSatya, the blockchain initiative of Rumsan Associates. AgriClear uses distributed ledger technology to record every meaningful step of a farm product's journey — inputs used, harvesting dates, processing details, and distances travelled — and attaches that record to a QR code printed directly on the product's label.
A consumer scans that code with an ordinary smartphone and instantly sees the product's full supply chain history. Because the record sits on a distributed ledger rather than a single company's private database, the information cannot be quietly rewritten after the fact, giving both farmers and buyers a level of trust that paper labels or verbal assurances never could.
Sindhuli Junar: Sweet Oranges With a Digital Paper Trail
In Sindhuli district, junar (sweet orange) farmers were among the first to adopt AgriClear, using it to record harvest dates, packaging details, and origin information at each stage of their supply chain. According to Yogendra B. Thapa, head of a sweet orange cooperative involved in the project, using AgriClear and QR codes helped junar farmers develop their market reach into Kathmandu. Farmer Mithu K. Thapa has similarly noted that combining online marketing with the AgriClear system boosted both direct sales and interest from visitors curious enough to see the farm itself — turning a traceability tool into a marketing and agritourism asset at the same time.
QR-Coded Goats: Heifer International and eSatya
One of the most visible blockchain agriculture projects in Nepal is the partnership between Heifer International Nepal and eSatya to bring QR-coded goats to market. Heifer International has operated in Nepal since 1993, supplying livestock, education, and resources to help poor families become self-reliant, and works closely with Nepal's Ministry of Agriculture on a goal to cut goat imports by half.
Through a Livestock Supply Chain Management System built on AgriClear's technology, Heifer and eSatya tackled a long-standing food safety gap: buyers in Nepal's meat markets have historically had little way of verifying what they were actually purchasing. With QR-coded goats, a buyer can scan a tag and see the animal's origin and handling history, which reduces transaction costs, strengthens farmers' bargaining power, and helps cut out uninformed middlemen pricing. The scale is significant — Heifer Nepal has planned to channel well over 140,000 goats through cooperatives during a single Dashain festival season, meaning even a modest improvement in trust and pricing efficiency touches a large share of the national goat trade.
Himalayan Honey: Verifying Purity From Hive to Jar
Nepal's high-altitude honey producers have applied blockchain traceability to one of the most commonly adulterated food products in the world. A honey traceability system built for Himalayan producers records hive GPS coordinates pinpointing exact apiaries, verified beekeeper identity and traditional harvesting method, harvest date and weather conditions, and botanical surveys identifying the specific nectar sources in a colony's foraging range.
Temperature and location sensors feed continuous data into the blockchain record as honey moves through the supply chain, so buyers can confirm the product stayed within proper conditions throughout transport. Laboratory results, including molecular fingerprinting used to detect foreign sugars and other purity markers, are attached to the same digital certificate — turning a jar of honey into a product a buyer can verify scientifically rather than simply trust on faith.
Eggs, Too: Shreenagar Agro Farm
Shreenagar Agro Farm (SAF) also uses AgriClear to track its egg supply chain, recording the producer's name, farm location, breed, laying date, cleaning, sorting, and packaging steps, along with the distance travelled before reaching a consumer. According to SAF's managing director, Moushumi Shrestha, the biggest challenge before adopting blockchain traceability was differentiating a quality product in a crowded market — AgriClear gave the farm a direct channel to tell its own brand story to consumers, backed by verifiable supply chain data rather than marketing claims alone.
Why This Matters Beyond Nepal's Borders
The bigger opportunity sits in export markets. If Nepali farm products can be reliably traced and verified at scale, they can be marketed internationally on the basis of proven safety and quality rather than generic origin labelling — a meaningful advantage for a country whose agricultural export base remains small relative to its farming workforce. Traceability data also creates a foundation for better-targeted agricultural policy, since patterns in verified supply chain data can reveal exactly where quality or safety issues tend to originate.
The Practical Takeaway
None of these projects involve cryptocurrency, and none needed to. They demonstrate blockchain doing exactly what it does best: creating a shared, tamper-resistant record that multiple parties — farmers, cooperatives, buyers, and regulators — can all trust without needing to trust each other directly. For smallholder farmers competing against larger, less transparent suppliers, that trust is quickly becoming a genuine competitive advantage rather than a technical novelty.
